Knowing how to swim is super important for kids. It’s a skill that they’ll have for life. And hopefully, they’ll have a lot of fun learning it. If your child is enrolled in a Greater Albany Public School, they’ll have free swim lessons for a couple of weeks during the school year when they’re in the 3rd and 4th grades. Besides that, Albany has several great options for swim lessons, some of which are summer only and others that are available year-round. Here are some great options for swim lessons in Albany, OR.
The Albany Y has swim lessons in the evenings year-round. At the time I’m writing this, they’re Mondays and Wednesdays, but be sure to check their website for the most up-to-date information. Lessons are 30 minutes long for ages 5 and under and 45 minutes for ages 6 and up. Children can start swim classes at 6 months old.
The Albany Community Pool is on the South Albany High School campus between the main buildings and the track. They offer year-round lessons and parent-child swim classes as well as adult water aerobics, aqua jogging, lap swim, and open swim for families. Youth lessons are Tuesday and Thursday evenings year round, and in the summer they also offer morning swim lessons. You’ll need to call or stop by the pool to register and confirm current session dates.
Albany Tennis Club has an outdoor pool that’s open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Open swim is free for members, and lessons are an additional fee. If you’re not a club member, you can pay a small fee for a swim lesson membership for the summer. The fee is per family (not per person) and lasts all summer. Lessons run in two week sessions and you can contact the club to sign up.
Our kids have also taken private lessons. This is a great option for children who may need a little more one on one attention or if your schedule doesn’t match with one of the above options. I’ve found the best resource for this is word of mouth by talking to friends and by asking for recommendations in local Facebook groups.
Swim lessons are a rite of passage for childhood. They’re not only fun, they also teach children valuable skills. Kids are never too young to start learning to swim. Your kids will be in good hands with any of these options for swim lessons in Albany, OR.
