If you’re wondering how to prepare for senior pictures for guys, you’re in the right place. Senior sessions don’t have to be complicated, and a little prep goes a long way toward making the whole experience feel relaxed and fun.
Whether you’re taking photos in downtown Albany, on a trail at Mary’s Peak, or at your high school, here’s how to make sure you’re photo-ready (without overthinking it).
Don’t just grab stuff from the closet and hope for the best. Try on each outfit with the shoes and socks you’re planning to wear. Check the fit, make sure there aren’t any holes, stains, or surprise sizing issues—and confirm everything still looks and feels good.
Make sure underlayers (like undershirts) don’t peek out where they shouldn’t. This is a great time to double-check that everything is comfortable to move around in—you’ll be sitting, standing, and walking.
I know it’s not the most fun part of getting ready, but wrinkles are super noticeable in photos—especially in dress shirts and lightweight fabrics.
Steam your clothes the night before and hang everything up. If you’re bringing multiple outfits, pack them on hangers so they don’t get crumpled in the car. (Bonus: cut out any hanger tags or fabric loops that stick out—those little things love to photo bomb.)
Avoid last-minute stress by setting out your entire outfit(s) the night before—down to shoes, belts, socks, and accessories. If you’re planning to wear a watch, necklace, or your class ring, make sure they’re clean and ready too.
Don’t forget to check that your shoes are clean. A quick wipe-down can make a big difference.
And if you want pictures with your car, be sure to wash it!
Get a good night’s sleep (yes, it actually helps).
Eat beforehand. Don’t show up hangry—trust me.
Brush your hair and bring a comb or brush in case it gets windblown.
Chapped lips? Use lip balm in the days leading up to your session.
Glasses? If they tend to glare, consider popping out the lenses or bringing a backup pair with non-reflective coating. And if you have the option of transition lenses or clear glass, bring the clear ones.
And most importantly—don’t stress. You don’t have to know how to pose or where to put your hands. I’ll guide you through the whole thing, and we’ll keep it easy and laid-back.
You can always text me if you have questions, want feedback on outfits, or just need a little reassurance that you’re not the only one who finds this part a little awkward at first.
Senior year only happens once, and your photos should feel like you.
