Fun Things to Do in Albany, OR with Kids at Christmas

Fun Things to Do in Albany, OR with Kids at Christmas

The holiday season is here, and if you’re in or around Albany, Oregon, you’re in for a treat! Whether you’re a local or visiting the Willamette Valley, there are so many festive activities to get your family into the holiday spirit. Here’s a roundup of the best kid-friendly Christmas adventures in the area to make your season merry and bright.  Some are right in Albany, and some are just a short drive away. Enjoy these Things to Do in Albany, OR with Kids at Christmas:

1. Take a Magical Ride on the Santiam Excursions Train

Climb aboard for a holiday-themed journey on the Santiam Excursions Train! I’m starting with one that’s not right in Albany, but Lebanon is so close and this is such a fun event. This nostalgic train ride is perfect for kids and parents who love the magic of Christmas. Expect twinkling lights, festive decorations, and maybe even a visit from Santa himself. (Ok, no maybe about it-they’ve got Santa and Mrs. Clause!)  Don’t forget to bring your camera for some adorable pictures! The holiday event is called the Candy Cane Express, and tickets sell out, so be sure to book early. Check their website for availability.

2. Albany Downtown Twice Around Parade and Community Tree Lighting

The Twice Around Parade in downtown Albany is the perfect mix of small-town charm and holiday fun. The route is only 8 blocks, so it’s a short, fun celebration to kick off the season. It’s traditionally held on the first Sunday in December and has school groups and bands, the trolley, and Santa riding on Albany’s antique fire truck. After the parade is the community tree lighting.

3. Explore Tennessee Thunder Stand & Railroad in Lebanon

Just a short drive from Albany, this unique railroad attraction is perfect for kids who love trains and Christmas lights. Bundle up, sip some hot cocoa, and take in the light displays that make this spot magical. For 2024, they run Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sunday, but be sure to check their website for updated hours!

4. Stroll Through Albany’s Downtown Window Displays

I love downtown Albany at Christmastime. The local shops have beautiful window displays, and the lights downtown are so pretty.

5. Cut Down Your Own Christmas Tree

Nothing says Christmas in Oregon quite like cutting down your own tree. Several local farms near Albany offer the full holiday experience: choose the perfect tree, sip on hot cider, and enjoy the fresh piney air. It’s a family tradition worth starting if you haven’t already.

6. Riverfront Park’s Holiday Lights in Salem

Just a short drive north, Riverfront Park in Salem transforms into a winter wonderland with its illuminated walking paths. The kids will love exploring the glowing displays, and it’s a great way to sneak in some post-dinner exercise—win-win!

7. Christmas Storybook Land in Albany

Step into a storybook at this beloved Albany tradition at the fair grounds. Christmas Storybook Land is a magical indoor display featuring scenes from classic fairy tales and holiday stories. Kids can visit Santa, marvel at the twinkling lights, and make memories that will last a lifetime. Bring your camera for the photo op with Santa at the end. It’s an Albany must-do. Admission is free, and you can bring non-perishable food items to donate if you’d like.

8. Lebanon Holidays in the Park

The first Saturday in December is Lebanon’s “Holidays in the Park” at Ralston Park. It’s a fun community event and tree lighting, complete with pictures with Santa. If you missed the event, you can still go see the lights every night from now thru Christmas. Different businesses set up displays for the town to enjoy. Check out their facebook page for updates.

9. Portland Zoo Lights

Okay, it’s a bit of a drive, but it’s worth it. Portland Zoo Lights is a dazzling display of millions of lights, interactive exhibits, and holiday cheer. If your kids are animal lovers, this outing is sure to be a hit.

10. Sea of Lights at the Aquarium in Newport

For an oceanic twist on holiday fun, head to the Oregon Coast Aquarium for the Sea of Lights. This event features festive underwater-themed light displays and holiday activities. It’s a great way to add some variety to your Christmas adventures. Bundle up because it can get chilly outside. My family loves this event.
