Spring break is nearly here — and it’s the perfect opportunity for updated family photos.
If you’re wondering how to fit a photo session into your break without adding more stress, take a deep breath and let me help. It doesn’t have to feel chaotic.
With just a little planning (and the right mindset), your Oregon spring break family photos can feel relaxed, meaningful, and even fun.
Spring break can feel like a lot. Kids are out of school. Routines are different. Travel plans might be in motion. It may not seem like it, but that’s actually the perfect setup for beautiful, natural family photos. When schedules are lighter and expectations shift, families tend to relax. And relaxed families create the most genuine images. Another plus of spring break is that sunset is earlier, so we can get gorgeous light without having to keep kids up past their bedtime.

A little preparation goes a long way.
Schedule a Wardrobe Review
Choose outfits a week or two in advance. Have everyone try everything on — yes, including shoes and layers. Making sure clothes fit and feel comfortable eliminates last-minute stress. Don’t let the lure of 2-day shipping push you into last minute preparation.
Spring weather in Oregon can shift quickly, so layers are your best friend. Texture and movement (think light jackets, flowing dresses, cozy knits) photograph beautifully.
Schedule Wisely
Block off a few hours around your session so you’re not rushing from one activity to another. Arrive a few minutes early so there’s time for bathroom breaks and a quick wardrobe check. When no one feels hurried, everything flows better.
Be Weather-Ready
If you live in Oregon, you already know that sunshine, clouds, and wind can all show up in the same afternoon.
Instead of chasing “perfect” weather, embrace what we get. Wind adds movement. Overcast skies create soft, flattering light. Sometimes the unexpected conditions make the most memorable photos. Some people shy away from spring photos because of unpredictable weather. But Oregon weather is unpredictable year round, so you may as well get them done when it’s better for your schedule!

Spring break is already different from your normal routine. Use that to your advantage. Think of your photo session as part of the experience and not another task on the checklist. Plan to get ice cream or something else fun after the session. When families shift from “We need perfect photos” to “Let’s enjoy this together,” the atmosphere shifts and it’s easier to capture the photos you’re looking for.
One of the best parts of spring break is the flexibility. Popular spots are less crowded than summer, especially mid-week, and because the sun sets earlier, we can often shoot at times that work better for your family.
Some of my favorite Oregon spring locations:
The Oregon coast
Local parks
Your own backyard
Forest trails
Open fields
The best location is the one that feels natural to your family.
This is a big one. Your kids don’t need to perform. They don’t need to pose perfectly. They just need to be themselves. I promise — I have endless patience for wiggles, silliness, and energy. My boys are growing up, and I miss that energy at home and soak it in with your kids. When children feel free to play, the photos feel authentic. And when you relax, they relax too.

These photos aren’t just about updating the frame on your wall. They’re about capturing your family exactly as you are in this season. The laughter, the closeness, and the personality. As my third baby is getting ready to graduate this year, I’m finding myself more and more nostalgic for when all my kids were at home. I love the pictures we have of the boys throughout the years, and I love creating that for other families.

Spring is one of the most beautiful times of year in Oregon. If you’ve been thinking about scheduling a session, this is your sign. Let’s create something relaxed, joyful, and true to your family.
