Common FAQs
Q: Do you offer any albums, prints, canvases, etc?
A: Totally! But I want you feeling 1,000% comfortable and excited about the quality of your photographs before placing orders on those. That way, you only order exactly what you want, when you want, and when you know with confidence that they are going to look amazing on your walls and in your fine art heirloom albums. And all of this is done & ordered right through your online gallery! If your package included print credit, it's redeemable in your online gallery. So easy.
Q: Can I upgrage my Package to include more images?
A: Yes! You can upgrade your package to include more digitals any time before or after your session. If it's before your session, just shoot me an email and I'll send you and invoice. After your session, upgrades can be made right in your online gallery. So simple!
Q: what happens if it rains the day of my session?
A: Rainy days can make for beautiful images, and sometimes rain in the morning can still mean a dry afternoon. Not all rainy days are created equal! I'll keep an eye on the weather, we can reschedule as needed. Depending on the forecast and type of session, we can usually make that decision the evening before or the morning of. There are also beautiful covered bridges in the area that are perfect for a rainy day and have been some of my favorite sessions.
Q: How long have you been a photographer?
A: I've loved photography since high school, and I got my first non-point and shoot camera in 2001 when my first baby was born. It was before the days of digital photography, and I still love a good film print, although I haven't picked up that camera in ages. (Yep, I'm officially old. But I kinda love it.) I photographed friends and family for years, and I finally started Jen White Photography in 2011.

Your session is booked! Now what?! If you haven't put it in your calendar, please take a second to do it now!
My family sessions are fun and relaxed, and I'm so excited to be working with you! This guide will answer many of the questions you may have about your session, and don't hesitate to email me if you have any more.
Location If we didn't pick a location when you scheduled, I can help you with that. I have several favorite places within an hour of Albany, and I'm always open to suggestions.
Time of day I schedule outdoor sessions in the early morning or 1-2 hours before sunset. This gives us the soft, glowy light you've seen in the images on my website. In-home sessions are best mid to late morning. If you need another time of day, we can pick somewhere with open shade. Mid day light is harsh and won't give us the same result as softer light, so I avoid anything too close to noon.
Day of the session/Prepping the kids Please arrive a few minutes early and give time for traffic and parking. Since we schedule around the light, it's important to start on time.
Prep your kids by telling them your friend will be taking pictures of the family. If you offer a bribe for the kids, please always try to dangle it as a fun reward and resist the urge to tell the kids they may not get it if they don't "behave". No kid ever smiled better by being told his ice cream might be taken away! Having had my own family pictures taken yearly for 20 years, trust me, I know this can be hard! It's a good idea for mom and dad to discuss this ahead of time. The more relaxed and positive you can be, the easier it is on the kids.
I'm good at encouraging kids and being flexible around what they're feeling, and they can feel that and will relax into it. It just might take a few minutes for them to warm up. I want them to be my friend during the session, and we'll joke and laugh. If we're trying a pose they don't like, we can adjust and go back to it later. As a parent, the little things they do may feel naughty and like they're not trying. But I promise it doesn't bother me at all. Trust me and trust the process, and I promise we'll get beautiful images.
Wardrobe I have lots of tips for clothing that will photograph well, but first and foremost choose a wardrobe you like and that fits well. Have everyone try on their clothes several days before the session so there's time to adjust if needed. Often, mom can pick something she feels great in and then build everyone else's outfits around that. Coordinating is better than matching. I love neutrals and earth tones. Think beige, blues, greens, soft pinks, etc. Dresses give lots of options for posing and movement, and they look great. The guys always looks good dressed up a little, too. Avoid bold patterns, words, and logos on your clothing. And don't forget the shoes! A great shoe helps any outfit.

Your session is booked! Now what?! If you haven't put it in your calendar, please take a second to do it now!
My newborn sessions are relaxed and easy, right in the comfort of your home (or the studio if we've already discussed that option!). I like to plan newborn sessions in the later morning to avoid rushing and to allow for window light to be at it's best.
What if baby is early? I generally schedule newborns within 1-2 weeks of their due date. But older babies are also great to work with. If your baby comes early, let me know and we can adjust the date as needed.
How long is the session? I block out 2 hours for your session, and I only take one newborn a day. There's plenty of time for feeding, cuddling, and a baby lead session.
What does a "baby lead session" look like? I will guide and pose you, and we'll go with what the baby needs. I have no expectations for the baby to be awake or asleep. If baby needs held or fed, that's totally fine.
Day of the session: When I arrive, I'll look around for where you have the best natural light. This is often the couch, master bed, and nursery. Don't worry about having a clean house. You just had a baby! I have 4, and I never want you to feel like you need to clean before I come. If you do anything, just clear off your nightstands of anything you don't want in the pictures. It's easy for us to clean up a little corner if needed as we go.
Wardrobe: Neutral, comfortable clothing is best. Dresses always photograph well, but if you're not a dress/button up person don't stress. Just be sure the fabrics are comfortable for baby to snuggle up into, and avoid distracting prints and logos.
Siblings: Becoming an older sibling is a big change! I keep my expectations low, and I like to start with the siblings because you never know how long they'll last. Don't worry, I get it-I've got 4 of my own. Prepare older siblings for the session by letting them know that a friend is coming over to photograph the family. It helps if they're not surprised.
Mom and Dad: I know it sounds more simple than it is, but just try to relax. Having a new baby join the family is wonderful and stressful all at the same time. My job is to capture this time in your life through photographs that will help you remember the connection and those tiny baby details that they grow out of so fast.
What should baby wear: I recommend a simple, neutral onesie with no print on it. It needs to fit well, so probably newborn or preemie sized. Dresses or oversized/not fitted outfits can be hard to work with because they pull up at the shoulders around baby's face. Please also gather a few favorite swaddle blankets.
Anything else I should do to prepare? Soon before I arrive, I recommend giving baby a good feeding. It's best to have them in their onesie for this so that we don't have to disturb baby before starting. A back up outfit is always a good idea.
Maternity Sessions If you choose to add on a maternity session, it can be done in your home or at a beautiful outdoor location. I also have access to a studio if you prefer. For your maternity session, I recommend something comfortable. Long, flowy dresses photograph really well. Earth tones and neutrals photograph beautifully. Just as with newborn, I recommend avoiding distracting patterns and logos. Partners and older children are welcome at your maternity session.

Senior year only happens once, and I'm so excited that you're investing in beautiful images to remember it! My senior sessions are fun and relaxed, and I'll walk you through every step of the way. I understand posing and movement to get you the best images, so you don't have to worry about any of that. Don't worry, I'll even tell you where to put your hands.

Wardrobe I have lots of tips for clothing that will photograph well, but first and foremost choose outfits you like and that fit well. It's your senior year. If you don't like my advice, don't take it! Try on your clothes a week before the session so there's time to adjust if needed. Cut off any of those pesky hanger tags that hang out the arm so we don't end up having to keep tucking them in. I love neutrals and earth tones. The Ultimate Senior Session Checklist (All the tips in the blog above, but in a super simple checklist!) https://jenwhitephoto.com/ultimate-senior-picture-checklist/
Number of outfits Most seniors wear 2-3 outfits. Even if you want only one outfit, bring a back up just in case of wardrobe malfunctions! I have a pop up changing tent I bring to make outfit changes easy. You might want to bring a pair of slides to make changing easy and keep socks clean.
Arrive on time Please arrive a few minutes early and give time for traffic and parking. Since we schedule around the light, it's important to start on time.

Jen White has taken our family photos the last two years and we absolutely love them. She knows what works and how to make you look good and get the pictures you want. We always end up with photos we love when she takes our pictures, even when our toddler isn't being cooperative. I 100% recommend Jen White.
Jen did our daughter’s newborn pictures and they were so sweet! I loved them all. She came to our house and it was very calm and comfortable. Jen is a professional and she is worth every penny!
Jen was a joy to work with. She was super fast to respond to messages, kind, patient and courteous during our photo session and is a wonderful photographer. We are so happy with our newborn lifestyle photos.

I absolutely love Jen and the beautiful photos she takes! Our family pictures with her are the best we’ve ever had and any picture she’s taken of our kids is displayed in our home. She does such a fantastic job with lighting and making you look your very best. Very natural and stunning photos. She’s also super great to work with, relaxed and fun which I think was key to get the genuine smiles from my kids and husband. I recommend Jen 100%!
Jen is professional, friendly, and talented. She’s always able to get excellent photos of our family in any setting, and is such an expert at capturing our kids in their best moments.
Jen is fantastic to work with! She has done our family photos the last couple years and I am always happy with how they turn out. I’ve got 4 young kids, which can make photos difficult, but she is always great with my kids! She’s so patient with them, and always follows their lead so that my kids have fun and don’t get frustrated. She is efficient and moves quickly through shots which is great with squirrely kids. She always has great site suggestions based on the current season, and she has an impeccable eye for the little details that really makes her photography excellent!
Jen was wonderful to work with and our pictures turned out beautifully!! I really don’t know how I’m going to choose which ones to frame because I love so many! Thanks Jen!
This was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had with a photographer. Jen is knowledgeable and professional, but also personal and patient. She took the time to capture the best of us and make the whole process very natural. I’m thrilled with the moments she captured.

Jen is professional, accommodating, and wonderful to work with! She works hard to capture the personality and bring out the best in those she photographs! I would highly recommend Jen for any of you photo needs!
Jen was very accommodating and fit us into her busy schedule so we could get senior pictures back in time for the yearbook. They turned out great!! I would definitely recommend her to anyone looking for a good photographer.
Jen is the best!!! Still so in love with my senior and graduation pictures! She is so fun to be around and makes you feel very comfortable in your own skin. Her work is incredible and I never stop laughing during our sessions. Stunning photography and an even better person! 12/10 recommend!
Jen has been taking our family photos for over 10 years. Her talent for capturing our family moments is on display all over my home. She even went so far as to lay down in bee infested grass to get just the right angle for some of my son's senior photos. Her mastery with cameras, lenses, lighting, poses, and editing is unsurpassed. To top it off, we always have a blast and laugh out heads off during the shoot. She is the best. And that's a fact.
Jen has taken my family’s pictures three times now. She’s amazing, professional, and extremely talented. I recommend her to everyone.
Jen was amazing for my family shoot! She positioned both me and my husband perfectly to compliment our figures. My kids were young and she knew just what to say to make them smile and laugh. I get sooo many compliments on the beautiful family photo she took that is hanging on my wall ❤️
She also took my extended family photo with 22 people. She was so patient, authoritative (loud voice so everyone knew exactly where and how to stand), and she let me check zoomed in on everyone’s faces to make sure we were happy. So grateful for her talented work!
